Garis Besar Cerita
K-On! bercerita mengenai 4 orang siswi sekolah di Jepang yang tergabung dalam sebuah klub musik pop yang sudah hampir ditutup. Meskipun hanya mereka anggota dari klub itu, namun pada dasarnya mereka bukanlah orang-orang yang berpengalaman dalam bidang musik. Karakter utama dalam anime ini adalah Yui Hirasawa yang tidak punya kemampuan memainkan alat musik maupun membaca naskah musik. Namun kemudian setelah masuk ke dalam klub ini, Yui berubah menjadi seorang gitaris yang handal.Karakter
- Yui Hirasawa (平沢 唯 Hirasawa Yui)
- pengisi suara : Aki Toyosaki
- Yui adalah karakter utama dalam K-On!. Dia adalah salah anggota klub musik dan adalah seorang gitaris. Yui memiliki sebuah gitar yang diberi nama 'Giita' (ギー太 ). Dia tidak terlalu bagus dalam pelajaran di sekolah karena sifatnya yang agak ceroboh dan suka melamun. Kelebihan Yui adalah kemampuannya yang sangat bagus dalam melakukan satu hal yang baru dipelajarinya, namun demikian dia selalu melupakan pelajaran yang telah dia pelajari sebelumnya. Selain itu, Yui adalah orang yang suka semua jenis makanan tanpa harus bingung pada kondisi berat badannya.
- Ritsu Tainaka (田井中 律 Tainaka Ritsu)
- pengisi suara : Satomi Satō
- Ritsu (atau Ricchan, nama kecil yang diberikan Yui) adalah presiden dari klub ini. Dia adalah pemain drum di klub ini. Sifat dasarnya adalah seorang yang tidak bisa ditebak dan selalu bersemangat, namun seringkali dia selalu membuat banyak keteledoran dalam administrasi klub.
- Mio Akiyama (秋山 澪 Akiyama Mio)
- pengisi suara : Yōko Hikasa
- Mio adalah seorang gadis pemalu di klub ini yang memainkan bass dengan menggunakan tangan kiri. Dia sebenarnya ingin ikut klub literatur namun karena dia diajak secara langsung oleh teman masa kecilnya Ritsu, akhirnya dia masuk ke klub ini. Dalam animenya, dia adalah vokalis dalam beberapa lagu dan pencipta lagu-lagu tersebut, salah satu lagunya adalah "Light and Fluffy Time".
- Tsumugi Kotobuki (琴吹 紬 Kotobuki Tsumugi)
- pengisi suara : Minako Kotobuki
- Tsumugi, atau lebih sering dipanggil 'Mugi' adalah pianis di dalam klub musik ini. Tsumugi adalah anak dari pemilik perusahaan musik. Keluarganya memiliki banyak villa dan beberapa akan dikunjungi oleh anggota klub ini untuk melakukan liburan bersama. Di klub, dia selalu bertugas untuk memberikan teh dan makanan kecil kepada para anggota klub yang lainnya. Pada awalnya, Mugi ingin bergabung dengan klub paduan suara, namun akibat bujukan Ritsu dan Mio, Mugi akhirnya bergabung dalam klub musik ini karena ajakan dari Ritsu dan Mio.
- Azusa Nakano (中野 梓 Nakano Azusa)
- pengisi suara : Ayana Taketatsu
- Azusa adalah pelajar baru yang akhirnya juga bergabung dengan klub musik, dia juga seorang gitaris. Azusa seumuran dengan adik Yui yang bernama Ui. dia sering bilang kalau dia adalah seorang gitaris pemula namun dia sebenarnya sudah bermain gitar sejak kelas 4 SD. Sejak dia bergabung di klub musik, Yui selalu minta pelajaran mengenai gitar dan bagaimana merawat gitar dari dia.
- Sawako Yamanaka (山中 さわ子 Yamanaka Sawako)
- pengisi suara : Asami Sanada
- Sawako adalah penanggung jawab klub musik. Dia adalah alumni dari sekolah ini dan juga adalah anggota klub musik ini pada saat yang lampau. Karena masa lalunya yang buruk diketahui Ritsu, akhirnya dia bersedia menjadi pembimbing klub ini. Pada waktu masih menjadi anggota klub musik, Sawako adalah pemain gitar seperti Yui dan Azusa.
- Nodoka Manabe (真鍋 和 Manabe Nodoka)
- pengisi suara :Chika Fujitō
- Nodoka adalah teman kecil Yui dan anggota dari pengurus siswa, dia selalu memperhatikan klub musik karena ada Yui di dalamnya. Pada waktu duduk di kelas 2, dia satu kelas dengan Mio dan kemudian akhirnya mereka berdua menjadi akrab.
- Ui Hirasawa (平沢 憂 Hirasawa Ui)
- pengisi suara : Madoka Yonezawa
- Ui adalah adik terkecil Yui. Dia masuk ke sekolah yang sama dengan Yui. Dia berada di kelas yang sama dengan Azusa dan sering pergi bersamanya. Sifatnya adalah kebalikan dari Yui, Ui adalah anak yang rajin, pandai memasak dan terkesan dewasa, namun demikian, dia selalu membanggakan Yui kakaknya.

- Teman sekelas Azusa dan Ui, dan terlihat sering berpergian bersama Ui. Ui mencoba menyuruhnya masuk ke dalam klub namun gagal karena Jun merasa klub itu aneh. Jun juga memiliki seekor binatang peliharaan yaitu kucing.
- Megumi Sogabe (曾我部 惠 Sogabe Megumi)
- Megumi adalah ketua OSIS sebelum Nodoka, dia juga pemimpin klub penggemar Mio. Dia sering mengikuti Mio waktu di sekolah karena dia selalu ingin melihat Mio sekali lagi. Megumi dapat ditemui di anime episode ke 6 dan ke 7.

| Yui Hirasawa has just started her high school life, but does not know if she should join a club or not. Ritsu Tainaka wants to reform the light music club, which will be disbanded by the end of April if at least four members cannot be found. Ritsu convinces her friend Mio Akiyama to join the light music club instead of the literature club. Tsumugi Kotobuki, originally intending to join the choir club, also agrees to join. In their search for a fourth member, the three put up a poster for the club which catches Yui's eye, and she submits a form to join the club, but Yui cannot play any instruments, and she soon realizes that the goal of the club is to form a band. Despite this, the three members try to get Yui to stay, and after playing a short piece for her, Yui finally joins the club as a guitarist, though she not only has to learn how to play it, but has to buy one first. | ||

| The light music club members help Yui purchase a guitar. With a ¥50,000 advance on her allowance, Yui goes to a music store where an expensive Gibson Les Paul catches her eye, though its cost is beyond what she can afford at ¥250,000. In order to make enough money, the girls decide to get part-time jobs and end up being traffic survey counters. After two days, and getting paid only ¥8,000 per day, they are still not even close to purchasing the guitar. However, Yui rejects their hard earned money in favor for a cheaper guitar. When the girls return to the music store, Yui is still drawn to the Gibson Les Paul. About to give up, Tsumugi haggles with the shopkeeper for a discount on the guitar. He immediately recognizes her as the daughter of the company's president and he quickly offers the guitar for ¥50,000. | ||

| Yui and the girls are now taking their midterms. Unfortunately, Yui practices playing her guitar chords instead of studying, and she fails the exams. If she fails the retake exams, she cannot participate in club activities, and the club will be disbanded. A day before the retake, Yui still has not been able to study much and begs Ritsu, Mio and Tsumugi into helping her to study for her retake. Days after the retake, an exhausted Yui returns to the club room with full marks. To celebrate, the girls ask Yui to play the guitar chords she had learned, but she has completely forgotten them. | ||

| Mio finds a box filled with stuff from the previous light music club, including a cassette tape of the previous club's performance at the school festival. After listening to it, Mio is inspired to get the gang together to practice over the summer break for the upcoming school festival. Worried about cost, the girls turn to Tsumugi, who just so happens to have a villa along the coast. They travel to Tsumugi's beachside villa, where Mio is determined to practice, however everyone ends up having fun. After eventually getting some practice done, Mio is awed by the sight of Yui playing guitar in front of some fireworks. However, when she re-listens to the cassette tape again, she is horrified by the shrieking voice on the B-side. To cheer Mio up, Yui plays a perfect guitar solo and learns a new trick of vibrato on the guitar from Mio. | ||

| The light music club is still not officially recognized, as they did not turn in a club form months before and have yet to find an adviser. The girls ask the music teacher Sawako Yamanaka to be their adviser. Though she initially refuses, it is discovered that she used to be a member of the previous light music club, and was into death metal, and Ritsu uses that fact to blackmail her into becoming the adviser. As the club still needs a vocalist and lyrics, Mio writes a song called "Light and Fluffy Time", which despite protest from Ritsu is accepted. Since Mio is too embarrassed to sing, Yui offers instead, but she cannot sing and play guitar simultaneously. Sawako teaches her to do so, but after all the training, she loses her voice. With only three days left to the school festival, Mio must perform the vocals herself. | ||

| On the day of the school festival, Mio wants to practice for the club's live event, but everyone else is helping with their classes' other stands. They later get some practice done, but Mio is still nervous about singing center stage, with Sawako's costume choices not helping the matter. Ritsu decides to hold a mock concert introduction to calm her nerves, although she still has jitters when the concert starts. Having seen her secret vocal practice beforehand, the others encourage her to do her best and the show manages to be a success. However, leaving the stage Mio trips over the guitar cable and accidentally exposes her underwear to the audience. She ends up getting a fan club, but cannot get over her embarrassment. | ||

| Yui's sister Ui Hirasawa remembers how Yui once attempted to give her a white Christmas by sticking pillow stuffing on the tree outside. Ritsu decides to hold a Christmas party for the club, and while her initial plans of holding it at Tsumugi's house fail, they eventually decide to have it at Yui's house, also inviting her friend, Nodoka Manabe. They also decide to do a gift exchange, and go shopping for various gifts. Ui prepares a lovely Christmas dinner for the group, which gets a little out of hand when Sawako shows up out of no where. During the gift exchange, Yui and Ui give each other some warm things for the winter. After the rest of the group leaves, snow falls and Yui and Ui decide to sleep together, although Yui ends up hogging the sheets. In the New Year, the club decides to go to the shrine to make their New Year wishes. | ||

| Ui enters Yui's school as a freshman, as well as her classmate Azusa Nakano. When the class arrangements are announced, Yui, Mugi and Ritsu end up in the same class, while Mio ends up in a different class with Nodoka. The group puts up with Sawako's ideas of promoting the club by dressing them up as animals. Ui and her friend visit the club only to find everyone dressed as maids, but they soon change into jerseys after finding it impossible to play while wearing the maid outfits. Meanwhile, Azusa walks around looking for a club that is right for her. The light music club gets ready for a live performance, but Mio is too embarrassed to do the vocals, so Yui does them instead. Yui forgets the lyrics at the beginning of a song, but Mio manages to back her up. Ui brings Azusa to watch the show, who is moved so much by it that she goes to join the club. | ||

| Azusa officially joins the club, although is shocked to find everyone drinking tea and eating cake instead of practicing. She yells at them when Sawako tells her off for actually practicing, but Yui manages to calm her down. Despite her objections, Azusa finds herself weak against Tsumugi's tea and cakes. Yui herself is rather shocked at how much better Azusa is at guitar than she is. Sawako brings a pair of cat ears for Azusa to wear, leading Yui to give her the name 'Azu-nyan'. Noticing she is a bit upset, Mio encourages the band to practice more, but the group quickly reverts to its lazy state. Azusa becomes really upset since she cannot understand why the band members she admired at the live performance behaves like they do. Mio explains to her that she stayed with the band because it is fun to play with the others, and Azusa decides to stay as well. | ||

| Azusa meets up with Ui for lunch and are later joined by Ritsu. Yui and Ritsu invite Sawako to join their next training camp, but she appears disinterested. The gang arrive at an even bigger villa than last year, though Tsumugi points out it still is not the one she desired. Yui and Ritsu want to play and Mio and Azusa want to practice, but the latter gets outvoted by Tsumugi in favor of playing. Azusa objects, but ends up having the most fun anyway, even getting sunburned in the process. After practice, dinner, and fireworks, Ritsu suggests a test of courage, and Mio and Azusa are shocked by the sudden appearance of Sawako. Later that night, Azusa helps Yui practice the guitar. Azusa meets up with Ui again, saying that despite not getting much practice done, she enjoyed the trip as she got to know more about the group. | ||

| When Ritsu is reminded by Nodoka to fill in her gym-use application, the band notices they do not have a name yet. Azusa notices rust on Yui's guitar strings, and it becomes apparent that Yui has never given her guitar maintenance before. They take it to the guitar shop where Mio gets entranced by lefty guitars. However, Yui does not realize she has to pay for maintenance, and when Tsumugi tries to pay, the staff refuse to take money from her; they tell her to consider it as a free service. Later, Ritsu starts to become jealous of Mio spending time with Nodoka and begins to fall out with her. She ends up with a fever, so Mio visits and smooths things over. Afterwards, Ritsu gets in trouble for still forgetting the form, but Nodoka backs her up. Since none of the members could decide on a name for the band, Sawako chooses the name "After School Tea Time" to get it over with. However, Yui ends up catching Ritsu's cold. | ||

| Yui is still sick from her cold, which is possibly attributed to her wearing a short yukata for too long. As the band tries to make do with Azusa as lead guitarist, Yui supposedly shows up over with her cold. However, her playing is too perfect and a slip of the tongue reveals that she is actually Ui, who had managed to play after a few days practice. Yui appears, but is still in no condition to play, so Mio suggests that she stay home until the day of the live performance. Yui eventually makes it in time, but forgets her guitar at home, so Sawako fills in for her while she goes to get it. Yui returns in time for the second song and the performance goes well, and the band even does an encore. | ||

| As the cold winter weather creeps in, and despite Yui's offer of having nabe with everyone, each of the club members have individual duties. Tsumugi gets a part time job at a fast food restaurant, Mio goes to the beach to get inspiration for her lyrics, Ritsu has to entertain her little brother and Azusa is asked to look after her classmate's pet cat, despite not being good with cats herself. However, Mio can't think of anything to write, Tsumugi buckles under the pressure, Ritsu ends up by herself and Azusa is left uncertain what to do when the cat starts throwing up. A random text from Yui cheers up the others and she comes help Azusa with the cat. They all meet up for burgers where Ritsu is shocked to find what she thought was a love letter addressed to her were actually lyrics Mio wrote. | ||

The anime's opening theme is "Cagayake! Girls" by Aki Toyosaki with Yōko Hikasa, Satomi Satō and Minako Kotobuki. The ending theme is "Don't say 'lazy'" by Hikasa with Toyosaki, Satō and Kotobuki. The opening and ending theme singles were released on April 22, 2009 by Pony Canyon. A single containing the insert song "Light and Fluffy Time" (ふわふわ時間 Fuwa Fuwa Time) used in episode six was released on May 20, 2009. A series of four character song singles will be released containing songs sung by the voice actresses of the four main characters. The singles for Yui (by Toyosaki) and Mio (by Hikasa) were released on June 17, 2009, the singles for Ritsu (by Satō) and Tsumugi (by Kotobuki) will be released on July 15, 2009, and the single for Azusa will be released on August 26, 2009. The anime's original soundtrack, largely composed by Hajime Hyakkoku, was released on June 3, 2009. The four songs highlighted in episode eight of the anime will be released on the mini album After School Tea Time (放課後ティータイム Hōkago Tī Taimu) on July 22, 2009. The single by Sawako's band Death Devil will be released on August 12, 2009.[5]
